I read in the paper the other day that cases of I.A.D. (internet addiction disorder) are becoming more and more common. I'd like to know your opinions on the matter.......are you or have you ever been addicted to social networking sites? video games? reading random stuff on wikipedia etc?

nowdays, i don't think you call it addiction. the internet an evolution changing factor/medium that we can not live without.
people that never used internet or don't know what to do with it call it that, but that just proves their ignorance about the subject. you can't be addicted to internet and the information it provides. you can be chat addict or some other kind of addict, but internet is just too vast for anyone to be addicted to it.

it would be the same as calling everybody "petrol addicts" or "road addicts", because they use petrol/roads to get somewhere.

however, if the addiction is specific to something less productive like chatting, social networking sites, video games, where one wastes hours of life each day neglecting own daily priorities and responsibilities, then i would call it an addiction...
...but it would not be called "internet addiction", rather "video game addiction" or "SNS addition", etc...

all in all, i am also a bit unsure of what "internet addiction" means? social sites, video games and chatting don't make up the entire internet, internet is much broader than that.

so how would i become an internet addict, if i don't do any of the above.

...the only way i can imagine an internet addict is somebody that keeps on bursting queries to google and following random links :D:D:D

Yea i agree....'internet addiciton' is very much so a broad and vague statement...
I think the interent is fantastic. It's crucial for work, studying, keeping in touch with people abroad...even keeping in tune with your language/culture (as i do on this site, yeaa kafic rocks hehe). However i do admit that i can spend a bit more time than is necessary on facebook etc when i can be doing something productive...i wouldn't say i'm addicted though...it's merely a way of relaxing or zoning out briefly at the end of a long day...and like dahin above i can stop....i just dont want to hehe...:D
Having said that, i do think it's worrying when i notice people who are constatnly on msn or playing stupid farmville or something....[and this is during the working day]......and i also know of people who have 'game nights' where they play console games through the night......in my eyes too much of anything is bad.....another thing i find quite sad is little kids spending hours on end on the computer.....surely that's not good! But that's going off topic as per usual...............
